The main character Virginia has become an icon at Macy’s as she is featured beside the large red mailbox where you can mail your letters to Santa. Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make A Wish Foundation for every stamped letter they receive.

It turns out that this story is true! These pictures come to you from Wikipedia. On the left is the real life Virginia and on the right is the letter she submitted to the newspaper.

Here is the newspaper editor, Francis P. Church who answered Virginia’s letter and had it printed in the Newspaper The New York Sun on Tuesday, September 21, 1897.

At seven, five, and three my kiddies believe in Santa Claus! He doesn’t get all the credit for the gifts under the tree, we also include gifts from Mom and Dad, each other and other family members, and the center of our Christmas morning is to celebrate the birth of Jesus. When it comes time to tell our kids about where ALL the gifts come from we plan to tell them that St.Nick was a real person who lived (some say he was a factual person, others say he is a legend) and through his generosity and the life he lead and through generations of storytelling the things that marked his life became alive in the person we have come to know as Santa Claus. The things that Santa represent are present in all of us as part of the spirit of Christmas… the giving of ourselves and our gifts! Virginia had a child like faith as most kids do that keeps the spirit of Christmas alive. “Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus is truly a fabulous find.”
