DIY Christmas Ornament

A guest post from AmieJo @ Life’s Little Projects.  A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to think of a Christmas decoration I could make that I had never seen before.  I had some glass ornaments and figured I would come up with something to do with them.  I am not really sure how I came up with this idea it just came to me.  I just thought that an ornament that looks like a glowing, sparkly snowball would be pretty on the tree.DIY Ornaments

To make these ornament you will need a few things:
  1. Clear Christmas ornaments
  2. Epsom salt
  3. Sugar
  4. Glue
  5. Water
  6. Paint brush
  7. Bowl
  8. Cookie sheet or something to set it on to dry
  9. Strand of lights.

The first thing you will need to do is mix some Epsom salt and sugar to get the look you want.
The sugar is thinner and more sparkly but the Epsom salt gives a nice texture.  I didn’t measure I just went for a look that I wanted. Next you should mix a little water with your glue.  I mix mine in a glue bottle that has some used already.
I do this because glue tends to be pretty thick so you want to make it a little easier to paint onto the ornament.
Be sure not to add too much water, you don’t want it too runny.

To get started take the top off the ornament.
Make sure to keep it because you are going to use the piece that goes inside the ornament.
You will not need the other part.

Keep this part.  You will be using it to hang the ornaments.
Paint the ornament with the glue mixture.

I had my salt/sugar mixture in a bowl so I could dip and roll my ornament into the mixture to cover most of it.
What did not get covered, I covered by holding the ornament over the bowl and sprinkling the mixture onto it.

After you have them covered put them upside down on a cookie sheet to dry.  They stood up on their own.
While they were drying I put up a Christmas tree and put some clear lights on it.
Once they were dry I took the ornaments to the tree.  I put them on the tree by placing a light inside.  I got them to stay by using that piece that goes inside.

This is what it looks like up close.  When it is all done you do not notice how it is hung unless you are looking for it.

I really love this ornament.  They are a great addition to our small table top tree.  I would love to do them for our large tree but the kids are too little and I know they would get broken.    DIY Ornaments
