These walnut snowball cookies are a buttery, nutty, sweet cookie that is perfect for this gift giving cookie jar!
Giving the gift of cookies during the holidays is one of our family’s favorite things to do! We create cookies in all shapes, flavors, and sizes and wrap them in tins, platters, bags, and boxes!
This year we are creating something new and fun to give! To celebrate National Cookie Day we are sharing my absolute favorite childhood cookie recipe! We are putting these walnut snowball cookies in a cookie jar and adding some decorations!
Growing up we would head to my Nona and Poppie’s house for the traditional Italian Christmas Eve. My aunt would bring to the table a life-sized cookie tray. Sweet treats of all kinds that she had spent days preparing!
I would dig through the cookie tray for my favorite cookie. Double fisting as many as my hands could hold, I would carry away the walnut snowball cookies.
One year I ate so many I couldn’t fall asleep. I promise you I heard hooves on the rooftop that year and in fear of being caught awake I buried myself under my covers in hopes that Santa would not leave coal in my stocking.
Needless to say, the very next year I was back at it. Only this time I took some home to enjoy instead of eating them all in one sitting!
This buttery, rich shortbread type cookie with nutty, earthy walnuts covered in powdered sugar make these walnut snowball cookies hard to resist! It turns out they look great in a cookie jar too!
We created this winter wonderland with a cookie jar, so fake trees, walnut snowball cookies and some ribbon! This is one sweet gift that is sure to bring a smile to someone and we are excited to share!
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1½ teaspoon salt
- 2¼ cups walnuts-chopped fine
- 3 sticks butter-unsalted & softened
- 8 ounce cream cheese-softened
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups confectioners sugar
- Preheat Oven to 350F
- In a bowl combine together the flour, salt, and walnuts. Set aside.
- In a large bowl cream together the butter, cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla.
- Slowly add in the flour mixture and stir until well combined.
- Roll 1 Tablespoon dough into a ball and place on greased cookie sheet. With the Tablespoon press down slightly on the dough to flatten the top.
- Repeat until dough is all gone!
- Bake for 14-18 minutes until light brown.
- Cool slightly then sprinkle powdered sugar on top and bottom of cookies!
If cookie spreads while baking, take a spatula and gently push edges in!
