These buckeye bats are peanut butter dipped in chocolate and crafted by a cookie to fly!
Happy October!
Over the past couple of weeks, my kids and I have been creating Halloween fun treats! We are creating projects and yummy treats that we can do during their Halloween class parties as well as our own Halloween party!
I am not a fan of bats, actually I am petrified of them! In Junior High, I was staying in a cabin at a summer camp, and while sound asleep on the top bunk I had a bat land on my nose. One of the worst experiences ever!
I do however, like anything peanut butter and chocolate and these adorable, yummy buckeye bats look nothing like the bat I encountered in Junior High!
My kids and I had a great time creating these buckeye bats as we rolled the peanut butter balls, dipped them in rich chocolate, and added the bat wings and googly eyes!
These buckeye bats are a perfect Halloween sweet treat, and as we nibbled on them we planned our Halloween party and how everyone would get a chance to create one of these! We bagged these up with paper bags, tied them with bakery string and shared them with our neighbors and other friends!
Buckeye Bats
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 stick butter, softened
- 3 cups confectioners sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate candy melts
- 1 1/2 teaspoons canola oil
- 18 fudge striped cookies
- 36 candy corn M&Ms
- 36 chocolate chips
- 18 decorative paper straws
Instructions
- Mix together peanut butter, butter, sugar, and vanilla. Mix together until all the ingredients are well combined. The mixture should be thick and creamy.
- Take a heaping teaspoon of peanut butter mixture and roll into a ball.
- Place a piece of wax/parchment paper on a cookie sheet, place the peanut butter balls on the cookie sheet, and put a straw in the middle of each one.
- Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- While the peanut balls are getting ready, break in half the fudge striped cookies for the wings. To make the googly eyes put the chocolate chips on a plate, and place in microwave for 15 seconds. Take the chocolate chips and put one on each M&M. Only do six at a time to keep the chips from melting.
- In a microwave safe bowl put the chocolate candy melts and oil. Place in microwave in increments of 25 seconds , stirring after each time until melted.
- Dip each peanut butter ball into the chocolate, coating the whole bottom but leaving the top open to see the peanut butter. I used a Tablespoon to fish each peanut butter ball out of the chocolate.
- Place the buckeyes back on the cookie sheet.
- Place a half of cookie into each side of the buckeye to make the wings, gently press. Then add a pair of googly eyes to each buckeye!
- Place back in the fridge for 10-15 minutes, or until chocolate hardens.
- Enjoy these buckeye bats!

These buckeye bats are adorable! And I love buckeyes! I cannot believe a bat landed on your nose!! I'd die!! Understandable why you're not a fan of them. Haha.
The house I grew up in had a huge barn on the property and there were HUNDREDS of bats living in it that would come out at night and fly around everywhere. It was like living in a haunted house. Haha. 🙂
CathyM says
Hi Sarah, thanks so much for checking out these bats! I could not imagine seeing hundreds of bats flying out from a barn, that would be crazy! Maybe if I didn't have an up close and personal experience with one, I would like them a little more! 🙂 I must admit I did enjoy eating these buckeye bats! 🙂

Buckeyes – just learned of those a few years ago as they’re not real common here in the sunshine state.
A bat landed on your nose???? Oh my goodness – I was shuttering just reading about that happening to you. I would have been traumatized for life! I saw a documentary the other day, however, about a lady who rescues baby bats. About half an hour into the story the little guy (who hadn’t learned to fly yet) actually started to look kind of cute and you could tell the lady loved the little guy. All that being said, however, hopefully a bat and I shall never be within 50′ of each other.
Your buckeye bats are very cute so I’ll put this on my list for Halloween. Thanks for sharing your story and the recipe.

CathyM says
Thank you so much Tavette for checking out these cute, sweet bats! The only bats I like for sure! Even if I am outside and see a bat flying high, I come inside! 🙂 Aww, thank you for your sweet compliment! Have a great time making these for your Halloween festivities!
