This sweet and spicy Honey Mustard Marinade & Dipping Sauce adds great flavor to any meat, fish or as a dipping sauce for pretzels!
The Spring Season is a super crazy one for our family, more crazy than normal. We are on the track six days a week. All 3 kids run track on two different teams. They hop off the school bus, change into track clothes, eat a little something and head out the door to practice. One day we toss in music lessons before track just to keep things interesting. 🙂
We eat dinner much early or later than normal and I prep and cook as much as I can ahead of time. They come home from the track hungry and ready to eat!
It’s breakfast time and I am prepping dinner. This honey marinade is perfect for fish, chicken, or pork because it adds great flavor, and keeps the meat or fish moist. It makes a great dipping sauce as well for dipping meat, cheeses, chips, or pretzels!
I save a little of the marinade to glaze over the cooked meat to lock in some extra flavor and to help keep the meat nice and moist! There is nothing quite like grilled meat that has been marinated!
I stir a little of this, a lot of that, a pinch more of this and before long I have the perfect tasting honey mustard marinade.
This time, I even wrote down how much of each ingredient I used!
My blonde sweet girl was helping me cook and she taste tested the marinade. She smiles, looks at me and says you know when you read a book and it just grabs your attention and you just need to read more and more. That’s what this marinade just did to me. It has a strong taste and I want more.
My 8-year-old girl is already a food connoisseur. Do you see the fork in this picture? My blonde sweet girl couldn’t wait a minute longer to taste the grilled chicken. 🙂
This marinade is a bit on the strong side, a little sweet and a little spicy. Of course, you can always make it sweeter or spicier depending on your taste buds!
Three mustards, honey, dark brown sugar, and some dried herbs come together to create one flavorful honey Mustard marinade.
- ¼ cup Dijon Mustard
- 2 Tablespoons Honey Mustard
- 2 Tablespoons Deli or Stoneground Mustard
- ¼ cup dark brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons honey
- 1 Teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 garlic clove- minced
- In a bowl stir all ingredients until well incorporated and smooth.
- Adjust flavor to liking adding more sugar or honey to make sweeter, or more mustard to make spicier.
- Place in refrigerator until ready to use.
- Use as a marinade for meat, pork, chicken or fish.
- Use as a glaze after the meat, pork, chicken, or fish is cooked.
- Use as a dipping sauce for pretzels, chips, or vegetables.
With this marinade, you can brush the meat or fish 30 minutes before you grill it and hours before. I usually like to leave the meat or fish marinating for several hours or even overnight!
I like to use stone ground mustard but my family is not a fan of the whole mustard seeds so I go with a smooth spicy mustard instead. It’s all good, the flavor is still out of this world.
